Fantastic Places to Stay

Christmas in Dominical

Date of Stay: Christmas, 2011

My wife and I wanted to return to Costa Rica with our four children (ages 15-25) and were looking for a beach house where we could spend Christmas after a few days of jungle adventure at Drake Bay. We were joined by a close family friend (77 years young) and found an outstanding home for the holidays at Caballitos del Mar. The home was perfect for our needs with a downstairs bedroom and bathroom for our friend, plenty of space upstairs for our family, and several gathering places for dinner, drinks and games. The home is located in an enclave of three homes with no adjacent development. There is a full-time security guard but we've never had any problems in CR before. Each home has a private pool and looks out over one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. Our hostess for our stay was Jennifer, who checked us in and helped with local arrangements such as transport and restaurant recommendations. She also pitched in with our laundry when the dryer went on the fritz. The town of Dominical is a 20-minute walk down the beach (low tide only) and a great destination at sunset. We can also recommend two local activities: ziplining with Osa Mountain Adventures (45 min south) and ATV touring with Karl at Diamante Verde Tours (office in town). The ziplining was excellent (even for a 77-year-old) but the ATV tour was our group's favorite activity of the trip. Karl drove us up into the mountains and we got a real "back door" tour of the countryside, ending with a swim stop at an incredible waterfall and lunch at his property overlooking a stunning valley. After two trips to CR over Christmas holidays, I would recommend Caballitos del Mar to families like ours or groups of three couples.

We stayed in this lovely house for almost a week. The rooms were comfortable and provided plenty of space and privacy for the four of us. Beautiful views from the upper decks. Birds galore in the jungle just behind! The nearby town, Domincal, and markets and road side stands had everything we needed for wonderful meals, or last minute and forgotten items. On our 10 minute walk into town we saw sloths, toucans, tanagers, amazing hummingbirds and had a wonderful meal at a Thai restaurant with a fabulous view of the river. Jennifer was a wonderful caretaker and both she and Federico answered every question we had. Definitely planning to return for a much longer stay.

My family LOVES tropical vacations. We've traveled to Hawaii & all over the Caribbean, but the accommodations at this utterly amazingly beautiful ocean-front house & property make it by far to top of the list as our BEST vacation spot ever. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT !! The view of the magnificent ocean and lush, green jungle is just beyond words-photos can't do it justice! The house itself is even more beautiful than in pictures- perfect, large, open with gorgeous cherry wood everywhere, granite counter tops, lovely large spacious tiled bathrooms and the convenience of top-notch appliances. Our awesome groundskeeper, Gustavo helped us pick coconuts in the backyard! We made Frozen Pina Coladas from scratch~Yum! Sightseeing:We highly recommend the Flight of the Toucan Zip Line @ Hacienda Baru. Tell Carlos his tall friends from Boston sent you! We visited & loved the nature & wildlife tour at Manuel Antonio National Park -especially the precious white-faced monkeys! We dined at El Avion Restaurant in Quepos (built as part of a historical war plane) - the view from the top of this restaurant was SPECTACULAR and the food was very good. Playa Uvita (just a few mins south of Dominical) is an extraordinary & unique beach & well-worth visiting. Visit at low tide so you can see the sandbar known as the "whale's tail" -PHENOMENAL! We also thoroughly enjoyed swimming in a beautiful, cool, refreshing waterfall that our WONDERFUL and HELPFUL housekeeper Jennifer showed us how to get to, It is a well-hidden treasure just minutes from the house and has a fun rope swing! Jennifer did an exceptional job of meeting all our needs, & made all our dinner reservations. Dining out was easy: BEST restaurant in the area- Exotica! -The gourmet food with a French accent & home-made luscious desserts were to die for! (need reservation.) LaParcella was also a top-notch dining experience & beautiful "up high" view of the ocean. We frequented Ruby's Home-Made Ice cream & watched the NY chef make home-made waffle cones right off the waffle iron-DELICIOUS! and only a few mins. from the house. Tortilla Flats- Casual good breakfast, lunch, dinner &close-by. Some days & evenings we just didn't want to leave our beautiful house, yard, pool & beach-We had ALL we desired right there! It was the most amazingly beautiful tropical paradise spot we've ever vacationed at! I can't wait to return there a 2nd time! Many thanks to the owner & tremendous staff for making our stay so wonderful and special!

Great Vacation Lodging in Dominical Costa Rica

My girlfriend and I and her two kids just spent 10 days in Dominical. The accommodations at this beach front property were just amazing. The place was spotless and the amenities were amazing. It was like being at a resort home with a swimming pool, living room areas upstairs and down stairs, three large bedrooms each with their own bathroom and shower. The kitchens were huge and had all the appliances we were used to at home including fridge, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven etc. Washer and dryer were also onsite in the laundry room. The home had cable television with digital TV’s and wireless internet for computer access. The best part it was right on the ocean and we spent many hours just watching the waves roll in. When the tide went out we explored the beach and the surrounding areas. The home is located about a mile from the village of Dominical. The village has many stores shops, bars and restaurants which provide for activities during the day and entertainment at night. There’s a great place to go swimming and sit under a waterfall just down the street. There are plenty of local unpopulated beaches where you can park your car and sit under a tree if you don’t want too much sun. The city of Quepos is 30-40 minutes north of Dominical which has some amazing beaches with monkeys in the trees to welcome you before you step on the beach. This is the perfect location if you plan on traveling travel up and down the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. There are plenty of gas stations along the highway and many stores along the way if you needed a drink or need to stop and buy groceries for dinner. There’s a bank and local grocery store 5 minutes up the street if you need and ATM. If you’re planning on vacationing in Costa Rica you must put this amazing location first on your list of places to consider for lodging.

I just returned from an amazing trip to Costa Rica. This was my fifth time I travelled to Costa Rica with my family. This trip was really the best, one of the reasons is the home and location of the town of Dominical. The town is a easy, friendly eco-tourism town. The house was incredible, a beautiful location with a beautiful pool, jungle and ocean. The beach had huge rock formations that you coud walk around at low tide, and even into town. It also was a surfing beach-RIGHT OUT YOUR FRONT DOOR. I want to express that this is such a beautiful location with all the great eco-tourism,with zip lines, horse back riding to waterfalls, alligator tours, jungle walk tours, water-rafting and close enough to venture to the Osa peninsula. The town has great little restaurants that we found on trip-advisor and recommendations of local. This Home and town is the ultimate Costa Rican adventure.

One of our best vacations

My wife and I celebrated or 25th wedding anniversary at this awesome place. Not having been to Costa Rica before we were a little nervous about safety and getting around. It all worked out so well. I rented a car from San Jose with a GPS ( a must). The roads down to Dominical were great. We stayed 11/2 hours from airport near Jaco at Villa Calleta and spent 24 hours in Luxury recovering from the travel day. Another 1 1/2 hours we arrived at our beautiful home in Dominical. This large spacious architecturally beautiful and quality built home is set in the Jungle with windows everywhere. The sound of the crashing waves and the cicadas really remind you that you are truly someplace else. The 3 bedrooms are separate and private and have air-conditioning. We preferred to leaving the windows open and use the ceiling fan. The pool, outdoor shower, 3 1/2 large bathrooms make this a great party house. It could easily sleep up to 9 using 2 couches. Jennifer, the on site caretaker, was very helpful and there is a night guard. We felt very safe and welcomed. I was surprised by how much there is to do in the area. Norma and Henry at Dominical Surf Adventures set us up with world class river rafting and freely gave us advice on all the other thinks to do. We zip lined at Osa Mountain Resort, new and probably the best in CR , planned is a 2km superman glide and 200 ft tarzan swing. We rode horses to an awesome waterfall for swimming and cliff diving if so inclined. We did a day trip to Corcovado National Park which is accesses by boat down the Sierpe River then along the coast. We hiked and beached it in Manuel Antonio State Park. I found the perfect surf spot for my intermediate skills in a beautiful bay called Dominicalito just minutes from the house. We had several glass-off sunsets with the waves all to ourselves. Everything is a good value in Costa Rica. We had many multi-course meals with good Argentinian and Chilean wines for under $100 for 2 including on our anniversary we went to Exotica. I couldn't believe such a romantic elegance could be found at the end of a dirt road surrounded by dense Jungle. We also liked Costa Pariaso, Cuna de Angel for nice dinners and La Fogata for excellent Pizza and Rotisserie chicken. I also recommend a daily Passion fruit ice cream from Rubys. My only regret was that I did not bring my kids..... well maybe not.

Dominical in February

Wonderful place on the perfect beach setting. Within walking distance of several great surfing spots and just down the beach from Dominical. Driving directions were hilarious! "1 kilometer from the guard house, just past the bridge, when you see the telephone pole with the stripes on it you're there." Lots of laughs figuring that out after dark. Great place for everyone, couples, families or small groups. Plenty of rooms/bathrooms. Crabs and Iguanas were very entertaining. A list of items to purchase before hand like laundry soap, salt, pepper etc. would have been handy. Everything was clean and repaired. Jennifer, the property manager, made reservations for us, helped w/ directions and loaned us her laptop which was very helpful. Thanks for a great time!!

Week long stay

I had the pleasure of spending a week at this property during November, 2010. I came with the intention of getting away from everything crowded and noisy. Remote, quiet, and natural but still connected and in touch were important to me. Everything I could wish for was here. This house has three really comfortable bedrooms with views of the jungle and beach. The kitchen is large, completely set up and easy to use. The living areas are open and comfortable. The cable brought in a large variety of TV channels, my cell phone worked perfectly, and the wireless gave me fast access to the internet (and email). But it's the outside that really is unique. I've never stayed in a house that was so close and accessible to the ocean and beach. It's literally about 50 feet away from the back patio through a small strand of trees. I sat on the patio by the pool every morning drinking coffee watching the Costa Rican jungle and beach and listening to the surf. And it's not just a normal every day beach. The sand is dark and fine. The jungle comes right down to it. It has large volcanic rock that jut up 20 feet in places making it scenic as well as great for surfing, skim boarding, sunbathing or just about anything else you like to do. For me, I could walk the beach a little over a mile to Dominical for breakfast or lunch. Dominical was an interesting place. A little town right by the beach with dirt roads, good food, a few bars and shops, a surfing and beach character that goes back about 50 years. I thought it was great. Anyway, I plan on coming back in spring with my two daughters (20 & 22) and a few of their friends...they'll love this place. Living in CA made this a bit of a trek getting here, but it was worth it. I can't recommend this home enough. The last thing I would say...there are two other homes adjoining this property, each with three bedrooms identical to this home. It's a great place for a large group or family to gather and stay. Lots of privacy, very unique in that was as well.
